Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Project Description

SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps, provides assistance to eligible individuals and families to supplement monthly food expenses. Eligibility and monthly benefit amounts are based on household size, income, resources, and household composition. SNAP benefits are provided monthly on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card that works like a regular debit card. Recipients use the EBT card to purchase foods at local grocery stores. SNAP benefits are not cash, and can only be used on food purchases.

The household monthly gross income has to be under certain limits. Some deductions may be allowed for things like housing costs, child or dependent care payments, and medical expenses over $35 for people age 60 or older or people with a disability.

A household is a group of people who live together and purchase and prepare meals together. People in the household are not required to be related.

See eligibility requirements (below) for income guidelines as of October 1, 2018.

Who May Apply?

  • The head of the household;
  • The spouse of the head of household; or
  • Any other responsible household member

Applicants may designate an authorized representative (a friend, relative, neighbor, or anyone else the applicant trusts) to go food shopping and use his/her SNAP benefits.
