September is National Literacy Month. Tutors needed!

Take a moment to think about how many things you read daily – a newspaper, emails, street signs, insurance forms, bills, recipes, prescription bottles, etc. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to function without having this fundamental skill? According to proliteracy.org, 63 million adults in the United States (29 percent of the country’s adult population over age 16) do not read well enough to understand a newspaper story written at the eighth grade level. Many adults in our community cannot read or write. Literacy is a basic tool that ensures individuals achieve productive, self-sufficient and healthy lives. Community Action, Inc.’s (CAI) Career Development Project empowers adults by providing high-quality, contextualized education and training programs to enable them to succeed in the work force, higher education, and the community and society. You can help promote the success of someone in our community. Volunteer tutors are needed. Tutors are trained to work one-on-one or in small groups with individuals. No prior teaching experience is needed, only a Bachelor’s Degree (or pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree) in any area of study and a willingness to provide at least three hours per week as a literacy tutor. Free training is provided. By working together we can increase the rate of literacy in our community. Transform someone’s life today, become a tutor! If you are interested or know someone who may be interested in becoming an adult literacy tutor, please contact 814-938-5866 or 1-877-580-6739 and press “2” to speak with a Career Development Representative.
