Jefferson County Senior Corps-RSVP October Volunteer Station of the Month

Community Action, Inc. announced the Jefferson County Area Agency on Aging's Brockwayville Depot Senior Social Center was selected to be the Senior Corps-RSVP Volunteer Station of the Month for October. The Center has been a Senior Corps-RSVP Station since January 2005. Cheryl Moore, Center Director since 2011 states, "Volunteering helps individuals socialize and get out of their daily routine. The Senior Social Center, located at 425 Alexander Street, Brockway, Pa 15824 is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., welcomes everyone 60 years or older, and is not based on income." The "Depot", as it is fondly called, was originally the train station in Brockwayville, now known as Brockway, and has received Pennsylvania Historic Landmark recognition. It is available to rent for weddings, showers, and other events and seats 225 people. The Center will hold an Apple Dumpling Festival at the Depot on October 12, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. This event is open to the public and the Center welcomes everyone to stop in. Pat Cartwright, states "I enjoy helping with breakfast and fashion shows; everyone here is like family." Mary Cribbs states, "I enjoy helping others and volunteer daily when not working at the dentist office." Dorothy Reed who was the previous Center Director for 11 years now volunteers at the Depot. Betty Marchiori, states, "I volunteer for Music Night, most times I am here from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m." Senior Corps-RSVP recognized fifteen volunteers for their years of service with RSVP: Pat Cartwright, eighteen years; Mary Cribbs, Janet Donlin, Sonia Gess, Geraldine Snyder, and Maxine Youngdahl, ten years; Dorothy Reed, nine years; Donna Sicheri, seven years; Betty Marchiori, six years; Sue Berlin and Eva Palmer, five years; Nancy Harper, one year; and Sandra Eberhart and Barb Pisarcik, new RSVP volunteers. Brockwayville Depot Senior Social Center has many volunteer opportunities available to those looking to help in the community and be more sociable. Volunteers assist with serving and clean-up with daily breakfasts and lunches, bingo, music nights, special events, and general janitorial tasks. Eva Palmer shares, "I joined the Center when my husband passed, it helps me socialize." Maxine Youngdahl is 90 years young and makes time to volunteer regularly, it is like a job to Maxine who is willing to help with anything. Community Action, Inc.'s Senior Corps-RSVP is very proud to have the Brockwayville Depot Senior Social Center as a Volunteer Station. This Center illustrates the true spirit of volunteerism and is dedicated to making a difference in people's lives.
