Community Action, Inc. Names Jefferson County Senior Corps-RSVP July Volunteer Station of the Month

Community Action, Inc. announced In Home Solutions, a home health, home care, and hospice agency of WRC Senior Services in Brookville, PA, has been selected as the Senior Corps-RSVP Volunteer Station of the Month for July. The hospice agency has been a Senior Corps-RSVP Station since February 2015. “Hospice volunteers give the family a break and help relieve stress while offering comfort and a personal touch,” stated Kristi Vandervort, LSW, Medical Social Worker for WRC Senior Services. Kristi believes there is a need for hospice care and enjoys working with volunteers who spend their time reading the Bible or other books, playing games, coloring, singing, or doing whatever puts a smile on the clients’ faces.

Senior Corps-RSVP also recognized two volunteers for their years of service with RSVP. Vicki Carlson has been an RSVP volunteer since 2008 and a hospice volunteer since 2015. Patreen Raybuck has been an RSVP volunteer since 2013 and began sharing over 10 years of prior hospice volunteer experience with In Home Solutions in 2016. Vicki and Patreen shared their heartwarming stories of how each found their calling to the hospice volunteer world. Patreen shared the passing of her father at the age of 104. She was her father's sole caretaker, and at his request, she allowed him to pass away peacefully at home. The day prior to her father’s passing, Patreen heard about and started receiving hospice services.

Vicki’s story is similar, her father passed away in a hospital without hospice but Vicki was comforted by an individual sharing her father's room. Vicki then realized how powerful one comforting hand could make in a time of grief. Later, Vicki attended a meeting about hospice with a friend and decided to become a hospice volunteer.

“Volunteers are assigned one or two clients at a time to enable availability and the provision of quality time with each client, or to provide family support, or personal time to enable family members to nap, grocery shop, or simply obtain a haircut,” advised Kristi. Patreen shared, “You have to make the most of each day and live one day at a time”. Vicki added, “It’s very rewarding to spend time with a client who doesn’t have family, you know they are not alone.”

Hospice is a free service which offers support in someone’s home, nursing or personal care facility, or at the hospital. Hospice offers bereavement counseling and 13 months of follow-up care. WRC’s In Home Solutions also annually holds memorial services for their clients.

Community Action, Inc.'s Senior Corps-RSVP is honored to have In Home Solutions as a Volunteer Station.
