Community Action, Inc. Names Clarion County Senior Corps-RSVP June Volunteer Station of the Month

Community Action, Inc. announced the Valley Thrift Shop was selected to be the Senior Corps-RSVP Volunteer Station of the Month for June. The Shop has been a Senior Corps-RSVP Station since March 1983. JoAnne Jacklin, Site Coordinator and Treasurer, has been with the Shop since it opened in 1983, and a RSVP Volunteer since 1997. JoAnne enjoys volunteering at the Thrift Shop and states, "I enjoy assisting those who are in need."

If you are in the area, stop by to browse the merchandise and share a story with the ladies. The Valley Thrift Shop is located at 224 Broad Street, New Bethlehem, PA and is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Shop accepts clothing and houseware donations during regular business hours and is seeking volunteers to sort donations, assist customers, and revamp the window display. The volunteers agree, “We are always busy with donations and assisting customers, we have local customers and a couple who stop yearly while on vacation from Missouri.”

All revenue from the Shop is used to pay rent and utilities at their location and the remainder is donated to non-profits within the Valley. Twice a year, in March and August, the Shop replaces their entire stock, and offers two weeks of free items to the public. The surplus is donated to Charitable Deeds in Knox, PA to assist other Clarion County residents.

Senior Corps-RSVP recognized 35 volunteers for their years of service with RSVP: Lucienne Brocious, Ilene Sheftick, Dorothy King, and Mildred Wolfgang, twenty one years; JoAnne Jacklin and Betty Miles, twenty years; Edna King and Virginia Young, eighteen years; Kathryn Klimek and Ramona Powell, sixteen years; Judy Tabler, fifteen years; Gwen College and Sandra Newell, thirteen years; Margaret Hollobaugh and Delores "Dottie" Mohney, twelve years; Millie Musser, eleven years; Ethel “Jo” Burdett, nine years; Dottie Bowersox and Dorothy Minich, eight years; Shirley Neiswonger, seven years; Janet Carr, Louise Fenstermaker, Sandra Hinderliter, and Elma Levy, six years; Nancy Brocious, Sandra Gahagen, and Carolyn McKay, five years; Mary “Liz” Hawk, Janet Shumaker, Deborah Silvis, four years; Bonnie McDaniel, three years; Carol Brooks, two years; Rosetta Bowser and Judith Huffman, one year.

Ilene Sheftick stated, “I have been part of the Valley Thrift Shop for more than 20 years and I love hearing stories from each of the customers.” Bonnie McDaniels added, “I also enjoy hearing stories, everyone is different.” The Valley Thrift Shop is a great way to meet new people while making a difference in the community. Dottie Mohney and Shirley Neiswonger both agree, “We enjoy helping the less fortunate and love being around people.”

Community Action, Inc.'s Senior Corps-RSVP is very proud to have the Valley Thrift Shop as a Volunteer Station.
