Community Action, Inc. Names Jefferson County Senior Corps-RSVP April Volunteer Station of the Month

Community Action, Inc.’s Community Garden was selected to be the Senior Corps-RSVP Volunteer Station of the Month for April. The Community Garden has been a Senior Corps-RSVP station since May 2015 when Wells Fargo Bank donated the plot of land on Horatio Street in Punxsutawney, PA to Community Action, Inc. (CAI). CAI, with the support of a local family, agreed to utilize the land to sponsor a Community Garden involving and benefiting area residents and the community. The Community Garden is in memory of Richard S. Moore, who loved planting and caring for a huge garden and giving the bulk of the produce to his family, friends, and neighbors. According to Susan Fusco, Moore’s daughter and CAI's Deputy Director, “CAI is hoping the community will volunteer to establish and maintain the garden in order to provide produce for those unable to have a garden at their residence. Dad would be happy his joy of gardening and giving will continue,” Susan added. Fusco and her husband Thomas have been involved in this project since the beginning and are working diligently with RSVP and community volunteers and CAI staff to get the garden started. Senior Corps-RSVP recognizes RSVP volunteer, James Doty, for his two years of service with the Community Garden. James has recently completed Penn State Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener’s course and is a great asset to project. Samantha Schrecengost, Senior Corps-RSVP Director states, “We are eager to start constructing planter boxes, fences, benches, and other garden items. This is a great opportunity to bring together volunteers and organizations to provide a useful garden to the Punxsutawney community. Community Action, Inc. is seeking organizations, businesses, and volunteers willing to donate time, supplies, or services to the Community Garden.” Those interested in donating to or volunteering with the Community Garden should contact Samantha at CAI. Senior Corps-RSVP is very proud to have CAI’s Community Garden as a volunteer station. If you are age 55 or over and interested in utilizing your skills and talents to improve our community and change people's lives, become a member of Community Action, Inc.'s Senior Corps-RSVP. Call Samantha Schrecengost, Senior Corps-RSVP Project Director, at 814-938-3302, ext. 236 or toll-free 1-800-648-3381 or via e-mail [email protected] There are many exciting and rewarding volunteer opportunities waiting for you!
